The outbreak of COVID-19 has posed significant challenges to public health worldwide. Understanding the transmission dynamics of the virus and its persistence on surfaces is crucial for implementing effective preventive measures. In this thesis, we develop a mathematical model to describe the spatial-temporal transmission dynamics of the COVID-19 outbreak. Our model focuses on describing the impact of heterogeneity on environmental temperature. We validated our model using the COVID-19 case data from the Health and Human Services Agency of San Diego County, California, USA. Using our model, we calculated the reproduction number R0 by solving the principal eigenvalue problem linearized around the disease-free equilibrium. We established theorems asserting R0 a threshold, determining the global stability of the disease-free equilibrium (R0 1). Using our formulation, we performed a thorough sensitivity analysis of R0 on critical parameters, such as diffusion coefficients and environmental temperature. Moreover, we studied the effects of the change of various parameters, including those related to environments, on the transmission dynamics of COVID-19. Our study highlights the significant influence of population mobility and environmental heterogeneity on the transmission dynamics of COVID-19. Our results may provide helpful information for developing effective public health strategies and interventions.
