One reason for the poor academic performance of student-athletes is their inability to cope with the challenges encountered by being students and athletes. The purpose of this study is to analyze the strategies used by student-athletes attending a community college to cope with the competing expectations they encounter as a result of their roles as students and athletes. Three research questions guided the investigation to discover (1) what challenges student-athletes encounter as a result of their dual roles as students and athletes, (2) the strategies employed by student-athletes to cope with the challenges they encounter, and (3) the academic support services provided for student-athletes. A qualitative case study was conducted using open-ended interviews, participant-observation and artifact analysis. From the data emerged major patterns shaping the community college student-athlete experience. Persistent observation through prolonged engagement, on-going member checking and the triangulation of data sources were used to ensure trustworthiness. The basketball players are challenged by their head coach's attitude, their academic underpreparation, time constraints, continuously feeling fatigued, and financial concerns. The basketball players cope with the challenges they encounter by staying motivated, establishing goals, making academics their first priority, adequately managing their time, and depending on their coach, family members, teammates and other students. The coaches depend on the Office of Student Support Services to provide academic support to their players. Many instructors support the basketball players by providing them with additional assistance and time to complete assignments and by attending their contests. This study provides insight into the experiences of student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics and may provide a focus for practitioners as they develop academic support strategies designed to improve the academic performance of student-athletes.
