The purpose of this mixed-approach, quantitative and qualitative study, is to investigate the mediating impact of SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES DEVELOPMENT AGENCY OF NIGERIA on the relationships between critical success factors and the success of SMEs operating in Jigawa State, Nigeria. The study also determined the influence of critical success factors on the success of SMEs in Jigawa State, Nigeria. SMEs fail within the first five years in Nigeria. There is insufficient information for SME owners/managers to develop the best business strategies to mitigate SME failure. Critical success factors are considered information for the use and development of strategies to mitigate SME failure. The Nigerian government established the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency to support the development of SMEs and reduce their failure. Information from previous critical success factor models can only be utilized in specific locations or industries, suggesting the need to develop CSFs for SME models for new locations or industries. Seven of the twenty-one critical success factors identified in the literature review were extracted and used as independent variables in this study. After building the measurement model with data from 314 owners/managers who have operated SMEs for five or more years selected using stratified random sampling, ordinal regression analysis revealed evidence of a significant relationship when the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency mediates between education level and SMEs success, and financial resources and SMEs' success in Jigawa State, Nigeria; thus, the mediation influences SMEs' success. There is also significant evidence that prior work experience & management skills, education level, financial resources, and legal & regulatory framework influence the success of SMEs in Jigawa State, Nigeria. In the qualitative approach, data were collected from 15 purposefully selected owners/managers who participated in interviews. The results of the qualitative content analysis of the interview data were mixed with those of the quantitative approach, revealing objective findings with in-depth insight. The study positioned a critical success factors model for SMEs operating in Jigawa State, Nigeria, which can be used as information to develop strategies to mitigate SME failures. Mitigating SME failures might reduce unemployment and poverty among Nigerians and eventually improve the country's socioeconomic development, as envisaged by the federal government.
