Organizations of many types and industries depend on project management, and projects managed by skilled project managers (PMs) enjoy a higher probability of delivering lasting value. PMs, however, experience significant occupational stress resulting in lower productivity and higher turnover. The researcher designed this study to explore how practicing professional IT PMs in the United States described occupational stress for their profession, the factors that contribute to their occupational stress, and how they responded to occupational stress. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive study to gather data from 14 semi-structured interviews and two focus groups totaling 15 participants. Hobfoll's conservation of resources (COR) provided the theoretical framework for interpreting the collected data. Using Saldana's four-step coding process, the researcher analyzed the collected data and identified four themes associated with each research question. Practicing professional IT PMs in the United States described occupational stress as frequent with psychological, professional, and physical impacts on productivity and well-being. The participants described factors arising from their organizations, their projects, team management, and aspects of their roles as PMs. IT PMs also struggled to set and maintain boundaries to protect their work-life balance and well-being. The participants described responses to stress including personal, organizational, team, and project approaches often relying on positive interactions and relationship building. This description could lead to stronger interventions to alleviate occupational stress among IT PMs and provide a foundation for future study into the phenomenon.
