Our lab's previous findings have shown that infant OXTR genotype predicts maternal depression, even after maternal genotype is controlled. Research on the impact of OXTR genotype on depression has shown disparate findings relating genotype, and no studies have considered infant genotype in predicting postpartum maternal depression. Mother-infant interactions are co-regulating in healthy dyads, and the infant represents a large part of the maternal environment in the early postpartum era. Epigenetics seeks to understand how gene expression is modified by the environment, and recently, some investigators have begun to explore the impact of methylation on depression, again with disparate findings. Few studies have considered the interaction between genotype and methylation, but findings from studies suggest potentially differential methylation based on genotype. This dissertation sought to explore how maternal gene expression (methylation) may be modified by the maternal environment (her infant) in the outcome of postpartum depression.
