During a time of ongoing, global socioeconomic and climate crises, the field of psychology needs a clear theory of emancipation to guide its practice. The combination of dialectical materialism and psychoanalytic theory allows for making a critique of establishment psychology and developing a more emancipatory psychology out of this critique. The criticism reveals that establishment psychology's theory is inadequate and its treatment ineffective, but more importantly that it masks important sites of conflict, which are simultaneously emancipatory spaces of potentiality. Following the work of Jacques Lacan, these important sites of conflict will be called the Real and will be foundational for positing a clear path forward for a more emancipatory psychology. Second, the criticism reveals that establishment psychology developed not primarily due to scientific rigor and genuine care but more primarily in relation to the needs of the capital-nation-state. Finally, the dissertation turns to a more emancipatory theory and praxis for the field focused on an ongoing effort to highlight the Real of society and psyche to move our clients from spaces of unconscious dissociation to active conflict in the service of transformation. It is only by leaning into the Real that the field of psychology can hope to help clients and this shared world reorient the coordinates of life in an emancipatory direction.
