We study the behavior of nematic liquid crystals with disparate elastic constants in a thin domain. In recent works, asymptotics of liquid crystals in a thin domain are considered in [GMS17], [GMS15] and asymptotics of liquid crystals with disparate elastic constants are investigated in [GSV19], [GNSV20]. In this thesis, we combine these two regimes. Our model is motivated by a specific scaling of the Ericksen model for nematics with variable degree of orientation. We use methods from the calculus of variations, and in particular Γ-convergence as a main tool. Our results consist of the identification of a limiting energy capturing the key behavior in two and three dimensions, with analysis also supported by computer simulations.
