Background/objective: Youth sport injury is prevalent and female athletes are at increasingly higher injury risk due to structural and biomechanical factors. Specifically, female athletes are at high risk of ACL injuries due to poor landing mechanics. Neuromuscular training (NMT) reduces the risk of lower extremity (LE) injuries in athletes, but as an intervention, it lacks congruence in its definition and uniformity in delivery protocol across most studies. The purpose of this meta- analysis therefore, is to analyze the effects of a specific NMT, plyometrics-based neuromuscular training, on the landing kinetics and kinematics of adolescent female athletes as compared to the effects of regular sports training.Methods: Databases PubMed, Cochrane, Trip, and EBSCO Host were searched from 08/2022 until 10/2023. Study criteria included completed studies published in English and multiple study designs were included in the search. Neuromuscular Training intervention included plyometrics(I), and regular sports training without a structured NMT or plyometric program was the control (C). Subject criteria were female athletes with a mean study age of 11 to18 years, who participated in any sport with jumping, landing, or cutting. Outcomes compared were kinetic and/or kinematic analysis of a drop vertical jump. Statistical measures used were effect sizes (ES) confidence intervals, and I2 as a measure of heterogeneity across studies. Results: Of the 15 studies that met the criteria, 6 main landing measures were compared. All main measures favored intervention effect. Of these measures, knee flexion angle (ES of 0.62; p=0.000), hip flexion angle (ES of 1.42; p=0.041), and knee separation distance (ES of 3.22; p=0.042) were found to be statistically significant favoring the intervention.Conclusions: The results of this meta-analysis showed that NMT involving plyometrics improved the landing mechanics of adolescent female athletes and demonstrated greater effect than normal sports training without NMT. Results varied based on components of age, training dose and volume, and leg dominance.
