As America's pastime, baseball is enjoyed by athletes of all ages, and an integral part of the game is pitching. While baseball pitching does involve skillful coordination of the upper extremities, trunk, and lower extremities to produce maximum ball velocity, current literature regarding the vital role of lower extremities in baseball pitching is limited, especially within the adolescent population. The lower extremity kinetics of fourteen adolescent high-velocity baseball pitchers were analyzed using 3D motion capture and an instrumented pitching mound at stride foot contact, maximum shoulder external rotation, and ball release. The pitchers were split into two groups based on pitching style: those that primarily relied on the use of their upper extremities (UE) vs those that utilized both their upper and lower extremities (UE/LE). Statistically significant differences were observed in the hip, knee, and ankle joint forces and moments between the drive and stride legs at stride foot contact in both groups. The UE/LE group showed a significantly higher normalized stride hip moment of 0.29 ± 0.1 Nm over the UE group whose hip moment was 0.11 ± 0.05 Nm. Overall, it was observed that the UE/LE subjects experienced larger joint forces and moments while also producing an overall faster ball velocity. Pitchers that utilize the body's full kinetic chain during a high-velocity pitch are able to generate larger forces and provide a faster, more efficient pitch.
