Background, Problem, and Significance. The older adult is living longer, and as a result there is an increased risk of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) among this population. AUD is often un-detected during the primary care visit, and there is a growing need to improve screening for AUD. Purpose, Population, Intervention, and Outcome (PIO) Question. The aim of the project was twofold. The first was to establish an evidence-based AUD protocol and algorithm to screen the older adult population for AUD. The second aim was to facilitate the appropriate referral process and brief intervention as indicated following positive screenings. The project attempted to address the PIO question: In the older adult population, using a virtual platform for primary care (P), does the implementation of an AUD protocol and algorithm (I), identify patients at risk for AUD (O)? Methods and Proposed Measure. This evidence-based change project aimed to establish a standardized protocol for efficiently screening AUD using the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test Consumption (AUDIT-C) tool. The convenience sample of 27 participants was age 65 years and older, located the state of California, and recruited from Guardiant Health. Data Analysis and Results. Data analysis was conducted using the Statistical Package for the Social Services (SPSS) software version 28. The sociodemographic considerations included gender, age, ethnicity, marital status, living arrangement (lives alone or with others), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) score. Descriptive statistics were used to describe and show the dataset set from the project. None of the patients scored positive on the AUDIT-C, so it was not possible to test the referral and brief intervention portion of the algorithm and protocol. Implications. This evidence-based change project established a standardized process for efficiently screening and referring for AUD in the older adult population. The risks for AUD inform clinical care by improving the screening process for the older adult.
