The factors associated with an officer's readiness in working with marginalized populations can have a significant impact on the well-being of the community. The purpose of this study was to explore factors that may be associated with an officer's preparedness to work with marginalized populations. Specifically, this study examined 1) if there was a relationship between officers who rate or perceive Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) as more "useful" having fewer incidents, 2) whether an officer's perceived usefulness of CIT differs from those identifying as female versus not female, 3) if an officer's perception about whether their racial background has given them a greater perception of preparedness to work with marginalized individuals compared to their White counterparts, and 4) if those officers who rate CIT as more "useful" are inclined to be more prepared to work with marginalized individuals compared to officers who did not rate CIT as "useful". The sample size included a total of 107 participants all holding a current law enforcement position. This study found significant results for two of the four hypotheses. First, evidence was found that the more racially diverse a background an officer has, the more perceived preparedness they have to work with marginalized groups. Second, the more useful an officer perceived CIT, the more perceived preparedness they have to work with marginalized groups. Third, the more incidents an officer perceived having, the more useful they perceived CIT training. Lastly, there were no differences in perceived CIT usefulness scores between female identifying officers and officers who did not identify as female. When completing an exploratory analysis for the best predictors of preparedness, racial background was shown to be the best predictor of officer preparedness to work with marginalized groups. The implications of these findings are relevant and provide important information that should be considered by law enforcement organizations in areas such as awareness training and officer recruitment.
