Using the remote sensing technology is an effective approach for environmental monitoring, analyzing urban growth patterns and evaluating urban growth impacts on urban climates. An Urban Heat Island (UHI) is one of environmental impacts of the urbanization in the city of Chicago. The City of Chicago has put in place many policies and strategies to minimize the effects of Urban Heat Island (UHI), especially since Chicago heat wave of 1995. In this study, remote sensing technology was used to study the Chicago UHI phenomenon using Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery (TM) for the years 1985, 1995 and 2010. These images were utilized to assess urban area thermal characteristics by investigating the relationships between land surface temperatures (LST) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI). An ecological evaluation index was calculated using Urban Thermal Field Variance Index (UTFVI) to evaluate UHI mitigation policies between 1995 and 2010. Also, results of previous studies were compared and validated. The results of this project will help urban planners and policy makers in Chicago and other cities quantify the impacts of different scenarios (e.g., vegetation loss to accommodate urban growth) on LST and consequently to devise appropriate policy measures and determine the most effective strategies to reduce UHI effects in the urban areas.
