The purpose of this dissertation is to study the internship experience afforded business majors by public and private colleges and universities. It is my objective to use the results of this research as the foundation for designing, developing and implementing a valuable internship experience for serious business students. A great variety of internship experiences are available to the college and technical/vocationally-trained student throughout the United States and the world at large. An internship can be a valuable addition to the set of experiences to which college students are exposed during their undergraduate careers. For the business student, the net effect of four years in the college/university environment can be significant with respect to career choice and occupational status. In this regard, an internship is likely to produce not only positive intellectual results but also enhanced and expanded employment opportunities as well. The dissertation focuses on designing a successful model and integrating it into the business curriculum so as to maximize the student's college/university experience. To achieve this goal it is imperative that we first identify the student qualities which lead to successful participation in an internship. Data collected at the institutional level, from both student participants and mentors within the business environment, help to define quantitative and qualitative indicators. These indicators, and their relationships with each other and the related environment, will then be utilized as input for designing an internship program for use in a private university. The study results indicated several common characteristics of successful interns and high quality programs. In addition, a host of student-intern, mentor, and institutional preferences were identified. Important results included the value of a single managing mentor within the business setting, the lack of a clear connection between classroom theory and practice, and the potential to vastly improve the short- and long- term effects of an internship by introducing a four-year model supported by the "Knowing-Doing" theory.
