In the summer of 1993, mass-media institutions in the United States appeared to suddenly turn their attention to the existence of lesbians, with major publications like New York, Newsweek, and Vanity Fair announcing their presence as if they had discovered a new species. In May, New York published a cover story titled "Lesbian Chic: the Bold, Brave New World of Gay Women." The next month, Newsweek followed up with a cover that featured the word "LESBIANS," bolded and capitalized, with two seemingly contradictory cover lines: "Coming Out Strong" and "What Are the Limits of Tolerance?" Along with Vanity Fair's August cover story, featuring a now infamous photograph of butch lesbian entertainer k.d. lang receiving a shave from supermodel Cindy Crawford, the New York and Newsweek covers heralded the arrival of lesbian chic: an early-1990s mass-media trend that provided mainstream audiences with representations of lesbians and lesbianism that were marked as distinct from their predecessors. It's the 90s: Lesbian Chic in Context uses this moment in U.S. media history as the fulcrum for an extended analysis of twentieth-century lesbian visibilities and their framings within mainstream U.S. culture, with a particular focus on the tying of lesbian in/visibility to temporal progress. Through its investigation of the primary documents of 1990s lesbian chic and previous iterations of lesbian visibility, It's the 90s works to undermine the logics of newness that are persistently attached to lesbian representations and to examine how lesbian images and discourses are made useful in twentieth-century mainstream media contexts in the U.S.
