Sustainability has increasingly been a topic of conversation and concern both in the United States and internationally. As people continue to deal with the negative impacts of climate change, all disciplines, including design, can make changes to become more sustainable. One place these changes could start is in higher education. Design students can be taught to be sustainable in multiple ways before they enter the profession: through the materials they use and design, the messages they send, and the changes they inspire. This study examines the common scaffolding of eight National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) accredited post-secondary design education programs at R1 and R2 Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU) from the American Midwest. Based on program commonalities, this study focuses on the following course topics: color/color theory, design history, design theory, typography, 3D graphic design, digital (web, interaction, and motion) design, branding/identity systems, ethics, professional practice, and thesis/capstone. Based on previous research and ideas from other designers, suggested changes to improve sustainability are proposed. These changes vary depending on the type of course (digital, print-based, lecture) and can be expanded upon and applied to design programs across the United States and the rest of the world.
