Chronic inflammatory dermatologic diseases (CIDDs) are associated with poor health-related quality of life (HRQL), but identifying effective lifestyle treatment options may help improve HRQL for patients and their families. This dissertation focuses on three CIDDs: acne vulgaris, atopic dermatitis (AD), and psoriasis. Thematic analysis was used to assess HRQL themes from interviews and focus groups involving 12 family members of patients with AD and 11 family members of patients with psoriasis. Participants reported that these CIDDs limited daily activities, influenced relationships, and affected mental health. A cross-sectional project involving 127 individuals with acne and 52 individuals without acne evaluated 1) HRQL (assessed using the Skindex-16) and mental health factors (NIH Toolbox and PROMIS measures) by emotional resilience (Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale) and 2) associations between short-term dietary intake (Youth Risk Behavior Survey) with acne presence and severity. Median scores for all mental health factors and HRQL domains, except symptoms, were lower among acne patients with high emotional resilience compared to those with low emotional resilience. Emotional resilience was not associated with acne severity or acne-related symptoms. However, emotional resilience was correlated with mental health factors and emotional and daily functioning aspects of HRQL. Neither acne presence nor acne severity were associated with recent dietary intake, including fruit juice, fruits or vegetables, soda (sweetened carbonated beverage), milk, and alcohol. In summary, CIDDs (acne, AD, and psoriasis) were associated with poor HRQL and worse mental health. Family members of patients with CIDDs may benefit from further research on how to improve overall family HRQL. Further studies on emotional resilience among patients with CIDDs may contribute to development of strategies to treat the effects of CIDDs beyond symptoms. Prospective studies on diet therapy among patients with acne are warranted to understand whether diet therapy is effective in this population since short-term dietary intake was not associated with acne presence or acne severity.
