OBJECTIVE: To assess the repeatability and reliability of various color measuring applications for mobile phone on dental materials in clinically relevant shades and thicknesses.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A benchtop spectrophotometer (X-Rite Ci7600) was used as a reference instrument. Seven mobile phone applications were used: Color Analysis, Color Analyzer - Iro Shirabe, Color Grab, and Colorimeter from Android, and Color Analyzer - Iro Shirabe, ColorMeter RGB, and Optishade from iOS. Color measurements were performed using VITA ENAMIC shades 1M2, 2M2, 3M2, 4M2 and VITABLOCS Mark II shades A1C, A2C, A3C, A4C (n=10, for a total 80 specimens). There were three color measurement times, on Day 0, Day 1, and Day 7, to mimic short-, medium-, and long-term repeatability. The differences in color were analyzed using the CIEDE2000 formula and the corresponding color difference (ΔE00), and mean color difference from the mean (MCDM00) method. One-way ANOVA, Repeated measures ANOVA, and Paired sample t-test were employed for statistical analysis.RESULTS: Spectrophotometer consistently demonstrated the lowest mean differences by day (ΔE00 = 0.1 at Day 0, 1 and 7) and pairs of days (ΔE00 = 0.2, 0.1, and 0.2 for Days 0-1, 0-7, and 1-7, respectively), while other applications exhibited worse repeatability and reliability. iOS Optishade showed the lowest mean color difference among the applications (ΔE00 = 0.2, 0.3, 0.2 at Day 0, 1 and 7, respectively, and ΔE00 = 0.5 for Days 0-1, 0-7, and 1-7). Material-dependent variations were observed.CONCLUSIONS: There was a statistically significant difference among color measurements using cellular phone applications and a spectrophotometer, among the applications and materials. Spectrophotometer exhibited the lowest mean color differences, demonstrating highest repeatability and stability across the tested time periods. iOS Optishade showed the lowest mean color differences among the applications, yet significantly different as compared with spectrophotometer.
