The transgender female population exhibits a disproportionate risk of contracting and carrying the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This population is also less likely to take pre-exposure prophylactic therapy (PrEP), an FDA approved medication to prevent HIV infection. When taken as prescribed, PrEP therapy is about 99% effective in reducing the risk of getting HIV from sex (National Institute of Health's Office of AIDS Research, 2023). In order to effectively improve primary care provider's rate and method of primary assessment and management of HIV risk for transgender women, the provider must be adequately knowledgeable and prepared. By translating evidence into practice, the primary care provider can be more effective through use of proper screening tools to identify individual HIV risk and promote prescribing of PrEP therapy. Incorporating an HIV risk assessment tool into practice is an evidence-based strategy for primary care providers, utilizing the Promotion Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (PARiHS) framework. Study findings indicate the need for increased utilization of HIV screening methods among primary care providers to optimize HIV risk management among transgender women.
