How do differences in attachment and emotion regulation relate to people's thoughts, feelings, and behavior during relationship initiation? Research indicates attachment insecurity may be detrimental to dating and emotion regulation may be beneficial (Brenning & Braet, 2013; McClure & Lydon, 2014). However, using speed-dating paradigms, attachment has been studied in dating contexts whereas emotion regulation has not (Eastwick & Finkel, 2008; Mikulincer & Shaver, 2019). To address limitations of speed-dating paradigms, I introduced the Emotion Regulation and Relationship Initiation (ERRI) paradigm, a novel vignette paradigm that mimics the early stages of a potential relationship. I had three aims: Aim 1 was to establish the ERRI as reliable and valid; Aim 2 was to test associations between trait attachment and mood; and Aim 3 was to test emotion regulation as a moderator of those associations. The online sample consisted of 261 individuals (M age = 19.44 yrs.; SD age = 3.76 yrs.; 77% female; 56% White; 80% heterosexual; 57% single). Regarding Aim 1, a CFA indicated Anxiety, Depression, Ambivalence, Anger, Positive Mood, and Embarrassed as latent variables and State Attachment Security, Anxiety, and Avoidance as observed variables with strong global model fit and low correlations among factors. The ERRI was reliable with good to excellent alphas and strong convergent validity to the ECR-S (Wei et al., 2007). Latent variables (serving as mood outcomes) exhibited cubic variation across vignettes in a repeated-measures ANOVA, supporting their ability to elicit an attachment response. Regarding Aim 2, in contexts of anticipatory stress and ambiguity (Vignettes 1 and 2), trait attachment anxiety was associated with anxiety and ambivalence, whereas trait avoidance was associated with lower positive mood and higher depression. In contexts of conflict (Vignette 3), however, trait avoidance was associated with higher positive mood. Regarding Aim 3, there was, overall, a lack of findings for emotion regulation as a moderator, though anxiously attached individuals who were more adept at emotion regulation appeared to experience less anxiety before a first date. This dissertation introduced the ERRI and demonstrated its potential to be linked to trait attachment and emotion regulation. Clinical applications and future directions are discussed.
