This research study sought to discover how the process of "improvisational movement journaling" reflected the experience of a dance/movement therapy graduate student in a low-residency program at Pratt. Additionally, this study questions how embodied artistic inquiry contributed to the professional development of a dance/movement therapist-in-training. Art and movement were created in response to selected improvisational movement videos (journals) collected over the researcher's three years in graduate school. Findings of the study resulted in twenty four video pairs including the original Improvisational Movement Journal (IMJ) and its corresponding response video side by side, each portraying an expression of the researcher's experience across the three-year period. Skills relevant to the work as a dance/movement therapist, namely attunement, embodiment, and reflecting back movement were present, in addition to providing a reflective space for tending to the self. The creative process established through witnessing, analyzing, embodying, and responding to the videos served as an exploration into concepts imperative to the researcher's development as a dance/movement therapist such as: navigating uncertainty, softening, being in the uncomfortable, engaging with the senses, existing in and creating space, making adjustments, being playful, imagining, finding meaning, holding experiences, releasing, witnessing and being witnessed, being human, expanding, slowing down and grounding, and revealed that stepping into the unknown is where growth and expansion happens. The researcher discusses her experience of the creative process, working through uncertainty and self-doubt, meaning making of movement, and the self-reflective process around overarching lessons in becoming a dance/movement therapist. The art/movement collection created in the process holds information that cannot fully be described in words, and stands as a language and story of its own.
