Heme-based metalloproteins are crucial components in many kinds of biochemical processes including those involving cytochrome P450 enzymes, catalases, peroxidases, electron transport chain enzymes, nitric oxide synthases, and hydroxylamine oxidoreductases. A fundamental way of studying these systems is through analogous model complexes. Presented herein is data corresponding to the synthesis and characterization of a [Ru(Salen)(NO)(OCH3)] (Salen = N,N'- bis-(salicylidene)ethylenediamine) coordination complex, which asserts the species as a robust starting material platform for future reactivity studies. The reactions of [Ru(Salen)(NO)(OCH3)] presented consist of regeneration of a [Ru(Salen)(NO)(Cl)] starting material in a pure form and synthesis of a proposed [Ru(Salen)(NO)(1-methylimidazole)]PF6 complex. All species were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy in conjunction with electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical measurements where feasible. Infrared spectroelectrochemistry conducted on [Ru(Salen)(NO)(1-methylimidazole)]PF6 was consistent with the formation of the {Ru(NO)} 7 species via depletion of signal intensity at 1868 cm-1 and an increase in signal intensity at the expected 1570 cm-1 position due to an observed ~300 cm-1 shift. Additionally, measurements taken over the series of compounds prepared were compared to computational methods being implemented by the Shaw research group.
