Youth sports participation has evolved over the years, with a growing emphasis on sport specialization. Sport specialization refers to young athletes' early and exclusive focus on a single sport. The problem addressed in this study was that early sport specialization contributes to youth sports participation decline. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to identify factors that will contribute to minimizing specialization-related sport burnout. In this study, 16 adults were interviewed and included in a focus group. Data was collected and analyzed manually while maintaining confidentiality. Manual analysis was conducted by organizing data into themes to support each research question. Key findings included that athletes chose to specialize or sport sample due to peer impact, level of enjoyment, and level of ability. The implications of these findings are that athletes will continue to participate in sport if they enjoy it and are good at the sport and if their friends continue to participate. Athletes are not likely to continue if they are not enjoying the sport. Recommendations are made for coaches, parents, and athletes to keep youth athletes positively engaged in sports. One recommendation from this study is to encourage athletes to participate in activities where they have friends. Engaging youth athletes in sport can leave a lasting impression on their adult lives and their level of confidence. A final recommendation is for future research. Future research should focus on the study population of a younger age group to evaluate peer pressure.
