Lead halide nanostructured perovskites have emerged as promising candidates for energy harvesting and generation over the past decade. However, the major application limit for the most efficient perovskite, lead (Pb)-based perovskite, is the presence of the toxic Pb element. The objective of my Ph.D. thesis is to develop stable Pb-free perovskite nanocrystals and fabricate them into devices. The dissertation is mainly composed of three studies covering the development of nanocrystal synthesis, the improvement of their stability, and the preliminary attempt to fabricate perovskite flexible displays using the inkjet-printing technique.First, the synthesis of tin (Sn) halide perovskite nanocrystals is developed, as Sn is in the same group as Pb, shows eco-friendly merit, and has a close ionic size to Pb. Thus, Sn-based perovskite nanocrystals are expected to have similar tantalizing photophysical properties as Pb-perovskites, but they suffer from oxidization of higher order, causing structural breakdown. Inspired by our preliminary synthesis study and computational work of Cs-based perovskite, we successfully applied the ligand-assisted reprecipitation (LARP) approach method to synthesize orthorhombic formamidinium tin iodide (FASnI3) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) at room temperature(RT) and evaluated the influence of various synthesis parameters on the resulting optical and structural properties.Secondly, the stability of FASnI3 perovskite nanocrystals is significantly enhanced by introducing SnF2 into the precursor solution. We present a thorough investigation of the structural transformation from FASnI3 to FA2SnI6 upon exposure to air, along with the impact of SnF2 on the optical properties and stability of NCs stored under N2 over extended periods.Third, we demonstrate the integration of perovskite material into flexible devices. Before directly using less stable Sn-perovskite material, the initial studies were conducted using the most studied high-performance methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite to explore the optimal fabrication conditions to produce Sn-based perovskite NCs on flexible devices. The perovskite is deposited using the inkjet-printing technique on various polymer substrates, and the performance and morphology structure of perovskite are compared to establish an optimal printing condition.This dissertation presents the successful development of stable and eco-friendly Sn-based perovskite nanocrystals and demonstrates the preliminary work on integrating perovskite into flexible devices.
