The purpose of the current research was to explore the relationship between eudaimonia, a life orientation towards seeking meaning, and hedonia, a life orientation towards seeking pleasure, in the prediction of life satisfaction, to extend previous literature conducted in the West to an ethnically Chinese population. A second purpose was to explore the extent to which the relationship between eudaimonia and hedonia and life satisfaction was influenced by another fundamental existential attitude: belief in afterlife, which was assessed by both Western and Eastern derived measures. A sample of 154 Hong Kong Chinese adults who attended local primary care clinics completed measures of eudaimonia, hedonia, life satisfaction, and both Western and Taiwanese-derived measures of degree of afterlife beliefs. The results indicate that, dissimilar to the Western research findings, eudaimonia but not hedonia predicted life satisfaction, and that this finding persisted after controlling for income and religion. Participants endorsed eudaimonia to a greater degree than hedonia. Moderation analyses showed that belief in afterlife did not moderate the relationship between eudaimonia and life satisfaction; nevertheless, afterlife beliefs were positively associated with life satisfaction and eudaimonia. The findings raise the possibility that the Hong Kong population suffers from a conflict caused by the contradicting influences of cultural expectations and the society's materialistic modernization. On one hand, many of the participants endorsed a hedonic life orientation, but this orientation had no effect on life satisfaction; on the other hand, they endorsed eudaimonia to a lesser degree than hedonia, and yet the eudaimonic life orientation predicted higher life satisfaction. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that although a large proportion of the sample endorsed atheism as their religious belief, this sample still demonstrated a considerable degree of beliefs in afterlife. This suggests that afterlife beliefs and atheism can coexist, particularly in a culture with a multiplicity of religious faiths and spiritual perspectives such as Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, and Christianity. In light of these findings, implications for the field of clinical psychology on how to help Chinese individuals cultivate meaning of life and a good life are discussed.
