Passive-aggressive behaviors target over 40% of the American workforce in all industries annually. The general problem addressed in this study was employers using mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) to decrease passive-aggressive behaviors in the workplace without evidence of its efficacy. The specific problem was the lack of understanding about the differences between employees with and without mindfulness training and their propensity to commit passive-aggressive acts in the workplace. The purpose of this current quantitative causal comparative nonequivalent group study was to explore the differences between employees with mindfulness training and employees without mindfulness training and their propensity to behave passive-aggressively in the workplace. The sample for the study included 94 full time employees, from any industry, who have been employed by the same company for the past two years. Three previously published reliable and validated instruments were used to investigate the dependent variable perpetration of passive-aggressive acts, and independent variable mindfulness. The Positive and Negative Affect Scale was used to measure emotion, the Courtauld Emotional Control Scale was used to measure emotional control ability, and the Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory was used to measure trait mindfulness. Inferential statistics were performed to determine if differences in the perpetration of passive-aggressive acts existed between employees with mindfulness training and employees without mindfulness training. Findings suggested there were no significant differences between employees with mindfulness training and employees without mindfulness training in committing passive-aggressive acts in the workplace. A recommendation for practice was for employers to only implement a mindfulness-based intervention that was demonstrated as effective for the workplace and agreed upon in the scientific community. A recommendation for future research was also provided. Based on the concurrence and conflict of the study findings with the existing literature, future research may improve on the existing study by defining mindfulness training program and skill competency level with mindfulness of the participants.
