This research integrated the study of body image, social norms, and substance use by evaluating cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between perceived body image norms and individual health-related attitudes and behaviors. Given established but complex associations between body dissatisfaction, negative mental health outcomes, and risky body-change strategies, greater understanding of social and cognitive influences on body image informs intervention development. Participants included 837 undergraduate students (64% female) attending two public West Coast universities. Baseline and three-month follow-up data (80% follow up response rate) were collected via an online survey assessing perceived norms of body image and substance use, and individual attitudes and behaviors. Measures of body image, substance use, personality and mental health were included in the assessment. A series of t-tests revealed discrepancies in thinness and muscularity norms among males and females. Multilevel modeling procedures indicated stability of norms and dissatisfaction over time, with dissatisfaction as a stronger predictor of Time 2 outcomes. Regression analyses revealed misperceptions of thinness norms, contingent self-worth, and controlled orientation as predictors of eating disorders, and contingent self-worth and controlled orientation were associated with muscle-enhancing strategies. Depression moderated associations between weight-control motives and smoking, and drive for muscularity and coping motives predicted drinking-related consequences for females. Results inform norms-based interventions targeting misperceptions of thinness and muscularity. Findings provide a framework for prevention efforts to address multiple behaviors, including body image, alcohol, and smoking.
