This study concerns the central strategic concept in post-World War II international relations- nuclear deterrence, and the theory and analyses constructed over the years supporting and criticizing it. The paper is limited to a critical review and assessment of important research contributions to the subject from the early 19 70s to the present. It notes that while the early deterrence theorists (1946-1966) relied almost exclusively on rational, deductive thinking, a later set of analysts have followed an opposite- namely inductive--path. Recent studies were found to display two unique features: (1) they embrace a morecomplex theory of decision-making; and, (2) they employ historical cases of crises to draw inferences about state behavior. Despite the theoretical advances of recent writers limitations remain.
