Charitable giving is an important means of supporting public goods, but understanding the motivations behind it can be challenging. My dissertation provides insights into this issue.The first chapter aims to quantify the value of public goods linked to purchasing of cause-related products by employing structural econometrical modeling and leveraging two sets of bidding data from eBay on charity and non-charity of auctions of identical products. We find that bidders bid, on average 6% more in charity auctions compared to non-charity auctions, driven primarily by the warm glow of giving. Specifically, the magnitude of warm glow is 9 cents from each one dollar donation. The magnitude of pure altruism is positive but pretty close to zero. In addition, we were able to estimate the distribution of the value of charity revenue as a public good by taking the difference between the distributions of private values in charity and non-charity auction sets.The second chapter provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of the price elasticity of charitable giving investigating whether the current tax deduction policy is effective in terms of encouraging charitable giving. we identify and synthesize 81 studies with 113 point estimates finding that the current tax deduction is overall treasury effective, but considerable heterogeneity exists in estimating the price elasticity of charitable giving.The third chapter employs a field experiment coupled with structural econometrics to investigate the individual-level price elasticity of charitable giving, revealing an average price elasticity of -1.22, with considerable heterogeneity across various demographic and behavioral factors. Notably, the study reveals that the within-group heterogeneity in price elasticity is more pronounced than it across groups, which highlights the importance of accounting for within-group heterogeneity in price elasticity for accurate policy implications. Combining experiments and structural econometrics, as demonstrated in the third study, can be a promising approach to further understand the complex motivations behind charitable giving. Overall, my work provides valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers interested in promoting charitable giving and supporting public goods.
