The purpose of this study is the examination of monetary policy and its effects on the United States economy and banking industry from the period of 2002 - 2022. The specific contributions of the study are to examine monetary policy interventions resulting from different business cycles and their effects on macroeconomic performance indicators such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), inflation rate, unemployment rate, industrial production index, and consumer price index (CPI) and to evaluate the efficacy of the monetary policy instruments on the banking performance indicators such as direct credit loans, total assets, and non-performing loans. The study leverages the power of Kingdom's multiple streams approach looking at policy processes, in which politics, problems, and policy streams converge into "windows of opportunity" for policy change. As for the methods, consistent with the well-received literature, this study applies a quantitative research approach using secondary data from the Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Empirically, an ANOVA test was performed to reveal differences of the effect of monetary policy on macroeconomic and banking performance indicators from diverse episodes of the business cycles. More specifically, the Tukey post hoc test was employed to show the efficacy of the monetary policy interventions on the U.S. economy for specific episodes (expansions and contractions) of the business cycles. Findings revealed that the monetary policy has rightly boosted the United States economy and its banking industry. The significant differences in various business cycles are well documented, which support the effectiveness of the monetary policy. Analytically, the study revealed that monetary policy had a good bearing on macroeconomic performance indicators, such as GDP, inflation rate, unemployment rate, industrial production index, and CPI. Likewise, the monetary policy has significantly nurtured banking performance indicators, such as direct credit loans, total assets, and non-performing loans. Overall, the conventional monetary policy instruments, such as, the Quantitative Easing and the Open Market Operations delivered their promises to maintain price stability and nurture healthy economic growth.
