Amphibious operations have been an important part of the US Armed forces leading back all the way to the revolutionary war. However, since World War II amphibious landings have largely remained unchanged despite the large developments in strategy and technology that have occurred. This is due to a lack of knowledge on how vessels react in a surf zone environment. In order to gain more knowledge on vessel surf zone dynamics, model tests were conducted on a 1:32 scale model of a landing craft utility (LCU-2000) vessel. The model was a free running model that was run at 6 knots prototype scale over a number of different wave heights and wave periods with both regular and irregular sea states. Using motion tracking cameras all six degrees of freedom were recorded as the vessel transited across the surf zone; multiple wave wires were arrayed across the test basin to capture the wave spectrum at different depths. The heave, roll and pitch data were analyzed in spectral form and compared to a deepwater test of the same model. The surge of the vessel was analyzed based on the water depth underneath the vessel.
