I've always been interested in approaching materials from non-traditional directions. This body of work implements hand-cut sheet glass in ways that encourage the viewer to reconsider their relationship to light, space, and the body. In stacking hundreds of individual strips together, new qualities in this everyday medium begin to emerge. There is an allure to the almost water-like shimmer as light is refracted through the edges of glass, yet lurking just out of sight are rows of jagged, broken shards ready to cause harm. The dichotomous properties of this material-strength and fragility, transparency and opacity, violence and safety-lend for an abundance of possibilities in the sculptural applications of glass.Looking Glass is a narrative look into my past and present states of mental instability, expanding on themes of obsessive tendencies, losing oneself, and discovery. Drawing inspiration from artists like Tara Donovan and Robert Irwin, I'm interested in the use of seriality and installation to evoke a sense of delusion, instability, anguish, fear, self-discovery, and enlightenment. Though it is by no means a clear autobiographical account of my various mental afflictions, my work nevertheless begs to be viewed from a different perspective; to alter one's position so that a new image may come into view.
