This research examines what causes some IT projects to be successful with a purpose to gain insight from successful IT project managers about what factors contribute to the failure or success of IT projects. The literature shows that organizations around the world face significant IT projects' failure rates, costing millions of dollars in waste per failed project. According to the literature, for "every $1 billion invested in the United States, $122 million was wasted due to lacking project performance" (Arcidiacono, 2017, p. 5). IT project failure hurts many businesses and even threatens organizations' very existence. The current body of knowledge focuses on IT failures but has not sufficiently addressed what causes some IT projects to be successful. A qualitative generic inquiry with semi-structured interviews was used to collect data using openended questions. The target population consisted of project managers (PMs) in U.S. chapters of the Project Management Institute. A non-random sampling method was implemented to recruit 12 project managers qualified with project management professional certification. According to Ishak and Bakar (2014), despite the rigor of qualitative studies, their research results are not generalizable to a larger population, and their sampling is not subjected to demanding randomization (p. 29). Transcripts from the participants' interviews were imported into NVivo 12 qualitative data analysis software. The data were analyzed using an inductive thematic analysis procedure, resulting in three themes: (a) successful PMs plan and monitor projects, (b) successful PMs coordinate stakeholder efforts to accomplish shared objectives, and (c) successful PMs provide leadership and management. The "thematic analysis is process that is used to conduct an analysis of qualitative data" (Percy et al., 2015, p. 80). The findings revealed that successful PMs engaged in rigorous planning before a project began and in monitoring progress during the project. The findings indicated that planning involved clearly defining the project scope, budget, and schedule, as well as resource planning, identifying dependencies, and risk management planning. The findings also revealed that successful PMs monitored projects by comparing outcomes to scheduled milestones. Future researchers should determine what other factors may contribute to the success of IT projects.
