This study developed a measure of intercultural sensitivity based on the developmental model of intercultural sensitivity (Bennett, 1986; 1993) to be used in a public safety selection context. Experts reviewed the measure that was administered to a large, diverse police officer academy applicant sample and analyses were conducted on the results of the expert review and test administration. Results indicated that after measure refinement, the final 48 item measure closely approximated the underlying theoretical model. In terms of test construction, the measure produced reliable factor scores and reflected individual differences in intercultural sensitivity. We found evidence of racial/ethnic group differences for two of the five factors and also established construct validity for the measure. Practical implications pertaining to the usage of intercultural sensitivity measures in personnel selection and training were discussed.
