Research has established a strong link between childhood emotional maltreatment and depression in adulthood, however the exact mechanism linking these two experiences is yet unclear. Early maladaptive schemas are one proposed mediator of the relationship between childhood maltreatment and depression which has gained support in the literature in recent years. This study explored mediation of childhood emotional maltreatment (emotional abuse and emotional neglect) and adult depression via overall early maladaptive schemas, as well as the Defectiveness/Shame schema specifically, in a sample of 322 adult participants recruited online via trauma-oriented social media forums. Furthermore, this study assessed verbal abuse and attachment style as moderators of these mediation models. Overall early maladaptive schemas and the Defectiveness/Shame schema emerged as significant mediators of the relationship between childhood emotional neglect and depression, but not of the relationship between childhood emotional abuse and depression. Verbal abuse was a significant moderator of mediation of the relationship between emotional abuse and depression via the Defectiveness/Shame schema. Attachment avoidance moderated mediation of the relationship between emotional neglect and depression via the Defectiveness/Shame schema. Exploratory analyses testing the four schema domains (Disconnection/Rejection, Impaired Autonomy, Excessive Responsibility and Standards, and Impaired Limits), as mediators of the relationship between emotional abuse and depression and emotional neglect and depression respectively indicated that different schema domains mediated the relationship between emotional neglect and depression versus emotional abuse and depression. The relationship between emotional neglect and depression was mediated by all schema domains, while the relationship between emotional abuse and depression was mediated by the Disconnection/Rejection domain and the Impaired Limits domain. Results indicate potentially different pathways from childhood emotional neglect to depression and childhood emotional abuse to depression and suggest that negative self-directed schemas may be more salient in the pathway from emotional neglect to depression, while negative other-directed schemas may be more salient in the pathway from emotional abuse to depression.
