In this dissertation, I discuss the evolution of the personification of death in western medieval art from the earliest surviving examples to the time of the Black Death. Much labor has been devoted to the study of the iconography of death from the late medieval period, but the only pre-plague death motifs that have been treated seriously are 'The Three Living and the Three Dead' and the 'Triumph of Death'. Unfortunately this work has been done with only a vague understanding of the evolution of the medieval figure of Death. This dissertation is the first attempt to fill this need by providing a general synthesis of the evolution of Death to 1350. The content of the dissertation is as follows: Chapter I "Death in the Ancient World" surveys the perceptions of death in ancient art and literature. In Chapter II "Death in the Early Middle Ages: Satan-Mors" early medieval ideas on death are related to representations of Death as a fierce demonic monster. Chapter III "Death Conquered" discusses the various motifs depicting Christ's victories over death, as well as explaining the origin of the sickle as an instrument associated with Death. Chapter IV "The Female Death Figure" describes the portrayals of Death as a woman and relates them to the vices. Chapter V "Death as a Skeleton" explains the evolution of the skeleton from a representation of a dead person to a personification of Death. This chapter includes discussions on the motif of 'The Three Living and the Three Dead' and the representation of Death as a corpse. Finally, Chapter VI "The Triumph of Death" analyzes the various elements in pre-plague representations of this motif. The appendix includes a list of all the illustrated Apocalypse manuscripts through the fourteenth century which contain an illustration of the fourth seal. There is also a 95 page catalogue describing all of the western medieval representations of Death before 1350 that I have been able to discover. Lastly there are 143 photographs including some taken by the author.
