The principal thesis presented in this work is that churches are like franchised firms. The organization of most Christian denominations seems so closely parallel to modern day franchises that the application of the franchising model begs for comparison in an attempt to explain some parts of the evolution of the church. We focus on the history of the church in the Middle Ages. A franchise interpretation of the church organizes three important historical events-the Eastern Schism, the Great Papal Schism, and the Protestant Reformation-in a new way. The franchise model explains these in terms of incentive misalignments, the balancing of which is the challenge of the franchise organization. The papacy was the franchisor and the secular rulers were the franchisees. As predicted by franchising theory, the incentive for opportunistic behavior grew in the evolution of the Roman church, first by the papacy and later by the franchisees. In the earliest days of the Roman church, secular rulers paid royalties to Rome, but retained the rights to collect royalties within their own territory from the sale of bishoprics. As the franchise organization matured, the papacy attempted to reclaim these investiture royalties from the secular authorities. Organizational discord resulted, starting with the Eastern Schism and leading to nearly a century of rivalrous claims to the papal control of the church. The dispute was finally ended by recontracting the sharing arrangement of royalties from the investiture of bishops. Analysis along similar lines is applied to the Great Papal Schism and the Protestant Reformation. The papal schism, which resulted in three popes laying claim to the reins of the church, was precipitated by opportunistic violations of the exclusive franchisee territories and was preceded by the dislocation of the papacy to France for three quarters of a century. While the Protestant Reformation was drawn out over two hundred years through much of Europe, the initial split follows a pattern much like the earlier schisms. Indeed, if anything we are left wondering why the Reformation did not occur at the end of the papal schism instead of a century later.
