The effects of acculturation on health consciousness and health-promoting behaviors were explored among Mexican American and Anglo American college students. The role of gender was also explored. The levels of acculturation, health consciousness, and health-promoting behaviors were assessed. Statistically significant positive correlations were found in the scores between the health consciousness (HCS) and health-promoting behavior (HPLP-II) scales. Acculturation (ARSMA-II) scores and self reported ethnicity scores as well as acculturation and health consciousness scores yielded positively significant results. No significant differences were found for Mexican Americans and Anglo Americans in relation to health-promoting behaviors. No significant differences were found between genders in relation to acculturation scores and the health-promoting behavior scores. This research supports prior research indicating that acculturation does affect the level of health consciousness and health-promoting behaviors that Mexican Americans display. This study fails to support research showing gender differences in relation to acculturation and health-promoting behaviors.
