The purpose of this research study is to examine emotion's role in unconscious decision-making using the Implicit Association Test (IAT). The relationship between emotion and decisionmaking has mainly been looked at through the lens of positive and negative emotional states. However, the role of specific emotional states within the decision-making process has not been looked at extensively. A quasi-experimental/purposive sampling approach was used within this study. Data were collected via a survey and Greenwald, Poehlman, Uhlmann, and Banaji's 2009 Implicit Association Test. The overall sample of the study consisted of 288 individuals who lived in the United States and were within the age categories of 18 to 24 or 30 to 45. The regression model used the d-score built from the Implicit Association Test as the outcome variable (unconscious decision-making), and eight emotion variables (joy, trust, surprise, anticipation, fear, sadness, disgust, and anger), age group, and locus of control as the predictor variables. The multiple regression analysis found that two emotions-joy and trust-along with the age categories were significant predictors of unconscious decision-making. The findings from this study highlight the need for additional research regarding other emotional states outside of the eight emotions used in this study along with contrasting these emotional states with how research currently views emotions dichotomously (positive and negative).
