This study is a historical, in-depth examination of how negative stereotypical images and character portrayals of African Americans in film and television have a major effect on how African Americans see themselves and how society at large perceives and treats them. This study looks at the strategic placement of African Americans in film and television, the stereotypes they've been trouped into, the stories that are told, the stories that aren't, and why. African Americans and their robust history, experiences, contributions, and spirituality are explored as a basis to contradict and challenge the negative images that are consistently portrayed, bringing awareness, understanding, and truth to African American existence. This study takes great care in presenting factual evidence to expose the cinematic problem and solve it, while looking at the different ways to continue to combat the issue and better represent African Americans in film and television.
