Bioretention systems are commonly used to ease stormwater runoff and have gained in popularity over the past two decades and their performance has been validated. Several studies have emphasized the lack of studies that have assessed these decades after their implementation and clarity on how these best management practices are to be inspected, maintained, and effectively verified. During the present study, standard inspection of fifty-eight bioretention systems of different ages and locations in Prince George's County Maryland, USA was performed using inspection checklists and soil health assessments of the sites were conducted to corroborate results obtained from traditional inspections. Soil health in this study was assessed in three separates but synchronized pathways. The biological assessment includes the soil microbial respiration (Measurement of the rate of CO2 production by the soil), and the microbial population which were taken as an indicator to quantify microbial activity. The chemical pathways include soil pH, salinity, moisture content, and organic matter. Seven soil physical evaluations, including texture, temperature, infiltration rate, compaction, WHC, and color, also occurred to complete soil health assessment. A lab-scale experiment was conducted to evaluate different soil amendments to determine how soil enhancement could promote soil health and treatment response and performance within the bioretention of media. Results from the assessment of fifty-eight bioretention systems show that soil health parameters of 90% of investigated practices corroborate results obtained from the standard inspection. In addition, the correlation between soil respiration, microbial population, infiltration, and vegetation coverage percentage could provide a valuable overview of bioretention performance. Lastly, soil health assessment of the two carbon-based media amendments (biochar and coir peat) at different percentage shows that coir peat 1% was the most advantageous soil amendment that promotes high pollutant removal rate, and healthy performing practice.
