Background. This systematic review (SR) investigated the effectiveness of plyometric training compared to strength training in preventing reinjury in patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI). Within the SR is a critically appraised topic (CAT). The CAT delved into the validity of the Y-Balance Test/Star Excursion Balance Test compared to the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) in injury prediction. Methods. Four independent reviewers conducted this SR over five databases from September 2023 to December 2023. The following inclusion criteria were used in the SR: articles published between 2013-2023, full text available, and in the English language. Studies that were excluded from the SR were based on the following exclusion criteria: participants who had ankle fractures, medial ankle sprains, and high ankle sprains. The same four reviewers conducted the CAT over three databases with the following inclusion criteria: athletes 12-30 years old, published between 2013 and 2023, full text available, English language, and human participants. Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) and National Institutes of Health-National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NIH-NHLBI) criteria tools were used to rate these articles by each independent rater in order to reduce the risk of bias. For each article, a 95% confidence interval (CI) and effect size was evaluated. Results. The search conducted for the SR yielded 269 articles, and, after further analysis, eight articles were included in the SR: one systematic review, five randomized controlled trials, and two non-randomized controlled intervention studies. Using the same limitations as used for the SR with different search terms, the article search for the CAT produced three applicable articles to the topic at hand. Conclusions. Current research suggests that both plyometrics and resistance training are beneficial for CAI. These studies lack a timing element that explains at what point in the rehabilitation process these interventions were used. More research, such as a direct comparison of plyometrics to resistance training with reliable outcome measures, would be useful in determining the more favorable intervention.
