This project aimed to reduce appointment no-show rates at an outpatient mental health clinic by implementing a text message appointment reminder system. Appointment no-shows were a persistent issue at the DNP project site, as well as at many healthcare facilities across the United States. No-shows are associated with worsening health conditions and subsequent readmissions. Non-attendance to scheduled appointments increases healthcare costs and results in underutilization of health services. The primary reason cited by most patients at the project site for missing appointments was forgetfulness. To address this problem, the project implemented a text message reminder system in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team at the clinic. The intervention involved sending text message reminders to patients with scheduled appointments. The project was guided by Pender's Health Promotion Model.
