This thesis presents a comprehensive study on the enhancement of electrodialysis technology for water desalination and resource recovery within a near-Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system. Facing the critical challenge of global water scarcity, this research emphasizes innovative strategies for augmenting water supply through the recovery and reuse of water, nutrients, and chemicals from non-traditional water sources. The study investigates the comparative performance of commercial electrodialysis membranes across varying salinities, the development of monovalent permselective ion exchange membranes for selective electrodialysis, and the effects of spacer thickness on the performance of electrodialysis brine concentrators in a ZLD context.By employing bench-scale experiments, this work assesses the efficiency and effectiveness of selective electrodialysis and electrodialysis brine concentrator technologies, including the optimization of membrane and spacer components. The research demonstrates significant advancements in electrodialysis technology by optimizing membrane selectivity, durability, and overall system efficiency, thereby contributing to more sustainable water treatment technologies.Findings highlight the potential of electrodialysis in addressing environmental protection and resource sustainability challenges. This study's innovations in membrane technology and system optimization present a promising avenue for improving the efficiency and selectivity of desalination processes, with broad implications for the sustainable management of water resources and the advancement of ZLD systems.The research underscores the critical role of advanced membrane technologies and system configurations in enhancing the performance and applicability of electrodialysis in water treatment and resource recovery, offering valuable insights for future development in the field of desalination and water reuse.
