Prolonged sedentary behavior (SB) increases arterial stiffness (AS), indicative of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Current SB interruption recommendations lack specificity. This study assessed efficacy and acceptability of two SB interruption strategies (walking and seated pedaling) in older adults at risk for CVD. The randomized controlled cross-over trial recruited 18 participants (55.6% female, age:64.2+5.3 years, 30.3+3.8 kg/m2) with ≥2 CVD risk factors. Participants completed 'Familiarization', 'Walk', 'Pedal', and 'Control' visits and an exit questionnaire. Experimental visits included 2.3 hours sitting with or without 5-minute interruptions every 30 minutes. No significant interaction (p=.404) or main (Condition:p=.327, Time:p=.924) effects were observed on carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity (measure of AS). Heart rate significantly decreased over time (p=.013). Thematic analysis of questionnaires revealed high participant acceptability for the interruption design. These findings, despite limited efficacy in older adults at risk for CVD, offer valuable insights into interruption acceptability, guiding future targeted SB interruption strategies.
