The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how the child welfare public health nurses describe their experiences regarding compassion fatigue working with traumatized children in a large county in Southern California. The conceptual framework for this study was Stamm's professional quality of life. Three research questions led this study: 1) how child welfare public health nurses describe experiences of compassion fatigue from working with traumatized children, 1a) how child welfare public health nurses describe experiences of burnout from working with traumatized children, and 1c) how child welfare public health nurses describe experiences of secondary traumatic stress from working with traumatized children. Recruitment was via purposive and convenience sampling. The sample consisted of child welfare public health nurses who worked with traumatized children in a child welfare agency in a large county in Southern California. Data collection instruments used were 10 semi-structured interviews and six participants in one focus group. Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The results demonstrated how work and non-work triggers such as high caseloads, and empathy cause compassion fatigue. The results revealed the physical, emotional, and spiritual effects due to exposure from traumatized children. The results also documented the negative cost of working with traumatized children such as loss of work happiness. The results showed self-care activities helped to prevent or manage compassion fatigue such as taking a break. Findings can be used to create educational training programs and organizational policies to help prevent or manage compassion in the child welfare program.
