Background: Family caregivers are described as the backbone of the long-term care system. It is, therefore, a core priority of policymakers, communities, and the healthcare and social services systems to ensure that caregivers are able to maintain their health and vitality. While the effects of caregiving on health status have been well identified, to date, less is known about its relationship with self-perceptions of aging (SPA). This dissertation sought to examine SPA in caregiving contexts and the role of resilience resources.Methods: The Health and Retirement Study (2006-2020), a longitudinal panel study comprising a nationally representative sample of American adults aged 51 years and older, was used. Two samples were created: the first sample consisted of married/partnered respondents (16,001 observations) categorized into five subgroups based on caregiving transition status (i.e., new caregivers, previous caregivers, long-term caregivers, potential caregivers, and non-caregivers). The second sample included spousal caregivers (691 cases). Results: Multilevel analysis showed that, although caregiving transition status was not independently related to SPA, caregiving transition interacted with within-person sense of control to correlate with SPA. Specifically, long-term caregivers having higher levels of perceived constraints than their usual were likely to feel closer to their chronological age compared to non-caregivers. Also, previous caregivers having higher levels of perceived mastery than their usual were likely to feel an additionally younger than non-caregivers. Structural equation modeling confirmed that, among spousal caregivers, increased psychosomatic symptoms due to heightened caregiving demands wore out psychological resources, subsequently diminishing health and SPA. Lastly, latent profile analysis indicated that while nearly two-thirds of spousal caregivers had strong resilience resources, a subset of spousal caregivers displayed mixed resources or a lack of resilience resources. Their health status and perceived stress are key to having a balanced set of strong resilience resources. Conclusion: This dissertation highlights that the caregiving experience does not always result in negative outcomes. Instead, family caregivers' evaluations of the situations, along with their resilience resources bring diverse stories of family caregivers' lives. It provides insights on the importance of intervention programs and a safety net for assisting family caregivers to equip healthy resilience resources.
