This study examines the nature of the commercial development of rice production in northern Thailand as seen in the concrete historical experience of one village in Chiang Mai Province during the period from 1900 to 1981. The incorporation of the North into the world economy is found to be far from complete. Access to the important factors of production is not fully mediated through market mechanisms, but takes place mostly through other, extra-economic, relationships. These complexities have not been fully explained by most existing studies of development, which tend to examine either the national level or the village level, utilizing the phenomenon of exchange to explain changes. This has led previous studies to view most changes in rural communities as a result of the impact of outside forces alone. This study, in contrast, employs the production approach to bring together the two levels of society and analyze them in terms of their mutual interaction. This study also provides historical and ethnographic data on this transition process, collected during intensive field research in a village in northern Thailand between 1980 and 1981. This study focuses on the changing access to land and labor, which illustrates in action the dynamic relationships between socio-economic classes within the village. Through analysis of the agricultural production system and its interaction with the outside economy, this study is able to identify the dynamic forces underlying the inherently conflicting relations of production. These forces are highly complex, based on several kinds of relationships, including kin and community relations, dependency and patronage linkages, and economic connections, mediated through market mechanisms and the monetization of the traditional economy. The complexities of these various forces, in turn, are illuminated within specific phases of the transition process. This study concludes that the partial commercialization in northern Thailand is a result of the unwillingness of the Thai state, merchants and capitalist farmers to allow the complete development of both product and factor markets. This condition is strongly reinforced by the increasing contradictions in the transition to capitalism and by the worsening conflicts in the rural areas.
