To fully exploit the bandwidth of optical fibers and to allow simultaneous access to a single network channel without delay, a new optical-code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) network has been proposed. OCDMA systems, however, generally suffer from very high multiple access interference noise, which increase the likelihood of occurrence of bit errors. To overcome this limitation, forward-error correction (FEC) codes have been employed in conjunction with OCDMA technology to improve the performance. This thesis rigorously analyzes the bit-error-rate performance of FEC-encoded APD-based OCDMA networks. The statistical distributions of the multiple-access interference, APD random gain noise, and circuit thermal noise are included in the analysis. The feasibility of using FEC's for OCDMA networks is rigorously studied. It is found that channel encoding can greatly improve system bit-error-rate performance at the expense of modest bandwidth expansion. We conclude that Reed-Solomon codes are more advantageous to convolutional codes for OCDMA networks of high channel code rate. The network capacity and mean number of simultaneous users of FEC-OCDMA networks are also determined. As an application to the theory, a prototype multi-rate FEC-OCDMA computer LAN network is presented. The network performance is analyzed based on commercially available devices and measured thin APD's. The prototype OCDMA LAN can support up to 16 simultaneous users, on average, and reach a maximum total throughput of 4 Gbps. In addition, a new type of OCDMA encoder/decoder configuration for multimedia transmission is proposed. In comparison to existing methods, the proposed scheme varies the bit rate by varying the rate of the channel code while keeping the structure of the optical orthogonal codes (OOC) unchanged. This is an attractive feature since the OOC component is one of the most expensive units of an OCDMA network. It is shown that the new scheme can effectively support variable bit-rate transmission while having the advantage of network flexibility and reduced system complexity.
