Transgender athlete participation in women's sports is a contested issue. When determining laws and policies regarding transgender participation in women's sports, female athletes' opinions and rights should be considered. The feminist sociocultural-political and citizenship theory developed from the works of Pateman (1988), Fraser (2008), and Lister (2003) suggests those affected by the reach of any sociocultural-political policy should have a voice (Devine, 2022). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore biological female athletes' perceptions of the inclusion of transgender athletes in women's contact sports. Twenty-six biological female athletes involved in contact sports participated in this study. Semi-structured interviews using open-ended questions were utilized to gain a deeper understanding of participants' experiences. Data analysis revealed biological female athletes were almost evenly split on opinions of including or excluding transgender athletes from women's contact sports. Participants expressed concerns about fairness, safety, and physiological differences. Female athletes participating in the study indicated being open to training with transgender athletes; however, study participants were evenly split on competing against transgender athletes. Biological female athletes participating in the study recommended having a separate division for transgender athletes, hormone therapy rules for transgender athletes, competition restrictions by birth gender, and the need for more scientific research.
