Social workers are tasked with promoting social justice and alleviating social injustice, a charge that is acutely necessary given the range of injustices that permeate today's society. Social workers often struggle, however, to translate their social justice values into action, which can prevent social work from realizing its professional mission and effecting social change for oppressed and marginalized groups. This three-paper, mixed methods dissertation seeks to address this problem by exploring the factors and processes that lead social workers to engage in social justice action and that contribute to their sustained engagement over time. The three overarching questions were: What factors are associated with social justice action and how have they been studied in the empirical literature? (study 1); How do professional social workers come to engage in social justice action? (study 2); For social workers engaged in social justice action, how does engagement evolve over time? (study 3). To address the first question, a scoping review was conducted to investigate the factors and processes that contribute to social justice action and how they have been studied in the empirical literature. To address the last two questions, qualitative data were gathered through in-depth interviews with 25 master level social workers living across the United States with a history of engaging in social justice action. Findings of the first study indicated that many factors were influential in the development of social justice action, but none appeared both necessary and sufficient for engagement to occur; rather, engagement is likely the result of an interactive process between multiple intrapersonal and environmental factors. Results of the second study included a theory of how social workers come to engage in social justice action that suggests that engagement requires a reciprocally reinforcing process not only between an orientation and commitment to social justice, but also a foundation of preparation, readiness, and know-how. Themes from the third study illuminate how social justice engagement evolves and is sustained in practice over time and included: 1) Social workers who engage in social justice action develop a social justice lens through which they see, interpret, and interact with the world; 2) Social workers who engage in social justice action generally go through a process to figure out how they can most authentically and effectively contribute to the social justice landscape; 3) Social workers who engage in social justice action tend to seek ways to sustain themselves in doing the work long term. This dissertation adds to the social justice action literature by organizing and synthesizing extant findings on the factors and processes that contribute to engagement. It also identifies several entry points for cultivating action through social work education and highlights several protective factors, challenges, and considerations for sustained social justice engagement, with important implications for the profession. Future research can provide critical information to further enhance efforts to support social justice engagement in practice.
